The Good News and the Bad News…

September 28, 2006

The good news is that I just got Phil Gordon’s latest, the little blue book. The bad news is that I won’t be able to start reading it for a while as I’m busy with school and work, hence the lack of posts…

I will be putting up a sign up sheet tomorrow for the Tourney on Saturday October 14th. If you are committed to coming, please sign up.

Have your say!

September 26, 2006

This is where I would like to gather some feedback on an open forum about the last tourney or any tourney of mine you’ve been to. My only rule is constructive criticism. If you see something bad, suggest a change

Here’s an interesting post about Saturday night from one of my buddies from Milton (the one without a certain digit).

Topics for discussion:

  • Re-Buys
  • Etiquette
  • Tip Jar/Entry Fee
  • Tournament Formats you’d like to see(Next one will be a bounty tournament: $20 +$5 for a bounty chip, you knock a player out you get their bounty chip which you can cash in for $5. You can only take someone’s original chip when you knock them out).
  • Blinds Schedules
  • Anything tournament related…
  • Reserved List (should seniority matter)
  • Late Players
  • Cancellations
  • Bounties on previous tourney winners
  • Prize Payout structure

P.S. Next tourney Sat Oct 14th, T1000, invites to follow. At the right hand side of the blog if you scroll down you can see the reserved list.

The situation: The last hand before the re-buy period is over. 18 Players + 4 rebuys so far. You have @$13,500. BB/SB is $500/250. You look at KdQd. You raise it up to $1500. 7 Players at the table and all fold except the Big Blind. He thinks for a minute then goes all in. He is the chip leader and has approx $45K in chips.

What do you do?

Results from Last Night’s Game… Sept 23rd Tourney

September 24, 2006

Another fun tourney. I hope to hear people’s thoughts and comments over the next couple of days so if there is anything that you really like or would like to see changed, please let me know.

I had my laptop hooked up to the big screen TV which worked out perfect, as everyone could see the blinds for each round. Unfortunately, at the end of the night when I disconnected the screen froze and I lost all the data! I have peiced together as best I can, but if people can just post up any necessary changes (eg I knocked out player Y, I finished XX not YY, etc) and I will post a revised total later this week. I’m pretty sure I have the top 9 placings correct, and I’m close for 18-10 but not 100% sure.

An extra special thanks to:

  1. Marc and Dave who showed up early to help count the chips out and set up
  2. Renee for being the banker
  3. Thumbs for helping with the A/V setup
  4. Boyd for stepping up and dealing as well as helping to run the tournament while I was still playing
  5. Sami, Sandro, Marc, and Dave who helped me clean up!
  6. Nadine for bringing those awesome brownies, they lasted all of 5 mins!

The clean-up

A nice e-mail from “anonymous:

Hey dude. Just wanted to say thanks again for last night. I love the table
and chips. I think there’s a few things you could change to make things even
better (mostly the blind stucture, and chip distribution), but we’ll talk
about that later. It’s been quite a while since I played poker with you, but
you are obviously improved. I also think you’re at a huge disadvantage
having to run everything. You miss a bunch of opportunities to watch hands
and gather information. Plus you’re always having to think about everything
else instead of just concentrating on your play. Obviously there’s nothing
you can do about that though when you’re the host :(   Looking forward to
next time,

Hey anonymous, thanks for the e-mail. Much appreciated and looking forward to seeing you soon…

Tonight’s the big game…

September 23, 2006

I picked up some cheap chairs at Costco that are easy to store and are pretty sturdy. This will help with the setup as it has been a major pain in the *ss. Looks like we’ll have 12-16 players tonight… Should be fun!

Working on an MBA assignment…

September 18, 2006

Sorry nothing to report this weekend, just studied and surfed the web. Did some research for my Magic Tourney as well as my surging interest in wargaming (this is negatively correlated to my current level of enthusiasm for my MBA assignments)…

Poker Books I’m reading…

September 14, 2006

I just finished the following books:

Psychology of Poker: I highly recommend it and this is a fairly easy read. It groups players into 4 different categories and assign rationales for play styles to each. It does allow the reader to vary his play against different opponents, which I think is the main advantage of live play vs. online play. It asks you to fill out a survey to rate your own play style, strengths/weaknesses, etc.

How to Win No Limit Hold’Em Poker Tournaments: A great book on how to play the different stages of a tournament, different styles of tournaments, different players styles, and various hands in various positions. Another highly recommend, and a fairly easy read.

Currently Reading: Inside the Poker Mind

If I get approval to write CMT Level 1 my “fun’ reading will come to a crashing halt until mid-November.

I’m currently in negotiations to get a surprise player for my first Magic Invitational Open which will be held sometime next month. The format will be open bid for the 1997-2004 Top 4 Championship Decks as well as the complete Pro Tour 1 decks. One of the best younger Magic players finished 2nd in the World Series of Poker, and both games are definitely very similar in terms of reading the board, probaility, and laying traps for your opponent.

If I am writing CMT level 1 in November then to help blow off some steam (working out hasn’t been an option cuz of the MBA) I’ll be doing some acquisitions to prep for my foray back into wargaming next year. Looking to pick up some good WWII, WWI, Civil War, and maybe even Napoleonics and Ancients. Thought about some games already for my buddies back home and players I know in Toronto. Apparantly the card driven games are all the craze now, as evidenced by the big line of CDG’s at GMT. ASL still rules them all however, as Armies of Oblivion was recently released (AOO has been in development for over 10 years now…)
