The Big Hand at the Final Table…

August 14, 2006

So after we moved to the final table, the action was pretty tepid. A lot of jockeying back and forth but no real showdowns. Within a span of 15 mins and a couple of hands, 4 players went down in a flash. The first hand was Marc with 66 or 77, and the board was 8, 8 3?. Marc was getting blinded out so he moved all in. Kevin called instantly, but out of turn as Dave was still in the Pot. Dave had J 2 and dropped it. As it turned out Kevin had 8?, so he had trips. Another 8 came on the river and Marc’s night was over. I liked Marc’s call as he had to make a stand and it was just bad luck that Kevin had an 8.

A few turns later, Kevin was first to act and folded, Sandro thought for a minute and then went all in. I had junk so I folded, Dave thought for a couple of minutes and then went all in as well. This generated some excitement, and then Daphne called. To top it off, Sami called all in as well and we had a monster hand developing. The players laid their cards on the felt as this point they all had about even stacks (Sandro had taken a beating early). Here are the hands:

Sandro AK offsuit

Dave Qc10c

Daphne KQ

Sami KJ

And the flop… 2 A 10

Turn… A

River… 5

So that hand eliminated 3 players and left me (the small stack) intact. While a couple of the calls may have been sub-optimal, it was late and I think people were tired and wanted to end it.

My action at the final table consisted of two hands. One all in in which I think I managed to steal the blinds, and another all in against Kevin (2nd stack). I was getting blinded out and had 9-7, which for some reason I thought was marginally decent (read it somewhere). Kevin had pocket 6’s and called, and I hit a 7 on the flop. Basically I eked it out, and after talking to Thumbs and Sami about one critical hand early in the tournament I was happy with my play over the course of the night. As for the hand in question: I had AA and raised it up to 200 pre flop. Stacks were around $3000 and the blinds were like 30-60. Sami called and we saw a flop which was junk like J 8 5 but with 2 spades. I raised to $500 and Sami folded. I wonder if I overplayed that hand but after some discussion, I think I played it correctly.
